Wreckers Splash Trumbull

Jan. 21 - The Staples High boys swimming team is building towards its big meets. Seven Staples swimmers have qualified for the Class LL meet and seven more Wreckers are knocking on the door.
Staples took a step in qualifying more for States while preparing for tough dual meet competition Friday in its 102-73 win at Trumbull High and raised its record to 2-1. Trumbull dropped to 0-5.
“It was good to be back on the winning side of things after the Greenwich meet,” said Wreckers coach Jeff Schare.
Senior quad-captains Chris Wiederecht, Jeffrey Helt, Stefan Tziolis and Nick Pulvino along with junior Stephan DeLuca and sophomores Cory Bacon and Zach Slater have already qualified for Class LL. Inching closer towards joining them are senior Brian Rackson, juniors Brody McConnell, Larry Abel, Mac Mom-bello, Trevor Lally and Cameron Bruce and freshman Matt Wisher.
“I think we’re looking strong,” said Wiederecht. “It bodes well for the future because it shows how deep we are and what we can potentially do. Our hard work is paying off.”
Tziolis said, “We’re definitely training very hard so more people could make the State team and we’ll do better than we did in past years.”
Wiederecht won all four events he was in against the Golden Eagles, starting with the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.61) where he swam the second leg. Bacon led off the relay, Lally swam the third leg and Tziolis anchored it.
Three-fourths of the winning medley relay team won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.53) with Helt joining Wiederecht, Lally and Bacon. Abel, senior Adam Goltzer, freshman Josephine Grevers and Wisher were on the second place 200-free relay team (1:47.49).
Wiederecht won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.2 seconds. “I’ve been doing a lot of sprint work in practice and I was ready to go,” said Wiederecht. “I’m bigger and stronger from last year and I went in with a lot of confidence.”
Lally (24.58) was third and sophomore Michael Good-game (24.9) was fourth in the 50-free.
Wiederecht also won the 100-yard breaststroke. “It’s an event I don’t swim often and I tried to help the team wherever it’s needed,” said Wiederecht.
Sophomores Sikam He (1:12.60) and Michael Good-game (1:14.70) took second and third in the 100-breast.
Tziolis (54.34) won the 100-yard freestyle and was followed by Lally (55.95) and Grevers (59.33), who were third and fifth, respectively.
“I normally don’t swim it because I’m not a freestyler,” said Tziolis. “I worked on sprinting techniques in practice and put it to use in the 100-free.”
In the 100-yard backstroke, Tziolis (1:02.52) won, Rackson (1:07.17) took third and Abel was fourth.
“I’ve been training in the backstroke for awhile,” said Tziolis. “It’s my favorite stroke and I was consistent.”
Bacon grabbed his first victory in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.25). Rackson (2:21.22) and freshman Joss Abel (2:21.71) were three-four in the 200-IM.
“It mostly came from Water Rat practice and tapering last Wednesday,” said Bacon.
His second victory came in the 100-yard butterfly (56.27). Larry Abel (1:01.48) and Wisher (1:02.71) were three-four in the 100-fly.
“The Trumbull swimmer pushed me to win and I went into full gear,” said Bacon. “Jeff [Schare] pushed me and told me to have my best time.”
Wisher won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.68), edging out McConnell (2:00.70), who took second. Helt (2:02.80) was fourth. Slater won diving (1813.15) with a personal best and junior Matt Mirkine (101.85) was second. McConnell took second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.86) as he was edged out by Trumbull’s Nick Targonski (5:19.80). Helt (5:40.98) was fourth.
Trumbull won the 400-yard freestyle relay. Helt, Wisher, Larry Abel and Tziolis carried the 400-free relay team to second place (3:42.62).
The Wreckers hope to improve in their dual meets and have more people qualify for Class LL.
“We knew we’d beat Fairfield and Trumbull and Greenwich was out of reach,” said Schare. “Now we’ll have to get up to race in the other meets if we want to win them.”
