Wrecker Swimmers Sweep Tri-Meet

February 16, 2011 by ·

By Haylee Winikoff

The Staples boys swimming team swept a rare tri-meet Friday at Weston to raise its record to 5-3. Staples defeated host Weston, 100-85 and Fairfield, 107-71. Fairfield defeated Weston, 94-87.

Wreckers Coach Jeff Schare said, “To come away from a tri meet with two wins makes me very happy, this is our third meet this week and it says a lot about our boys and their abilities to preform after such and exhausting week.”

Staples did so well that it even went exhibition the last two events of the meet. The tri-meet was scheduled because of the rash of snow-induced cancellations. Originally, the Wreckers were supposed to host the Fairfield co-op meet but everything got combined into a tri-meet.

“Considering all the interruptions in our practice schedule I am very proud of my boys, this was a very close very exciting meet” said Mustangs Coach Victor Mirrer.

Despite its loss, Weston was still proud of the end result.

“We did the best we could for our small size and we did very well for what we were up against number wise,” Trojans senior co-captain Spencer Kelly said.

This meets diving event was nothing short of amazing. With 7 divers, diving six times each, each team was able to showcase their divers abilities. Staples senior captain Zach Slater won with a score of 260.60. Weston sophomore Dean Rapp (199.88) took second and Wrecker sophomore Tanner Blank (188) placed third.

All participants in the meet swam their hardest and many went home with personal bests. Staples had strong finishes in the medley relay (1:47:19), senior captain Scott Feder in the 100-yard butterfly (59:29) and senior captain Cory Bacon in winning the 100-yard freestyle (51:79). Sophomore Nathaniel Boley delivered another win for the Wreckers in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08:66).

Juniors Kyle Bacon and Matt Wisher gave Staples wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50:37) and 100-yard backstroke (59.01). The Wrecker won the 200yard freestyle relay (1:35:40).

The Trojans had two victories with sophomore Jordan Berger triumphing in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09:22) and Kelly won the 50-yard freestyle (23.68). Fairfield won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07:27) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:42:42).

With Record-Setting Races, Staples Beats Norwalk

February 15, 2011 by ·

By Doug Bonjour

WESTPORT — Cory Bacon and his fellow seven seniors on Staples’ boys swim team wanted to make their final home meet, “one to remember.”

As it turned out, the talented core did exactly that in more ways than one.

Bacon and his teammates Scott Feder, Kyle Bacon and Nathaniel Boley set both a school and pool record (1:41.50) in the 200-yard free relay, and senior Zack Slater bettered his own banner mark in diving by accumulating 266.50 points, as the Wreckers swam to a 100-74 victory over Norwalk-Brien McMahon on Tuesday.

“We wanted to go out with a bang. We really wanted to leave an impact on the team for many years to come and we want to set records that won’t so easily be broken,” said Slater, who earlier this season shattered the school’s diving record that had stood since 2004.

With just one meet remaining before the highly anticipated FCIAC finals on March 3, Staples turned its Senior Day into a memorable one right from the outset. Fourth-year swimmer Michael Goodgame, Feder, Joss Abel and Boley placed first (2:00.68) in the 200-yard medley relay to start, and Jon Blonsfield followed with a win in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.80 to give the Wreckers a 22-8 lead.

Staples was victorious in the first six events over a youthful Norwalk-Brien McMahon team that’s nearing the end of a brutal eight-day stretch. With four meets postponed already due to the record-setting snowfall in January, the co-op team’s been forced to cram five competitions into the last week.

“It’s tough to ask our kids to do back-to-back,” Norwalk-Brien McMahon head coach Doug Marchetti said. “We were a little shorthanded today, so add that up and it made for a rough afternoon.”

Sherman Lau delivered Norwalk-Brien McMahon its first individual victory when he clocked in at 57.97 in the 100-yard freestyle, narrowly defeating Abel (58.82) and Goodgame (59.82).

The Wreckers displayed superior depth throughout the meet, as they placed both first and second in each of the first five events. Boley finished first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:18.83, ahead of Kyle Bacon (2:29.43) and Lau (2:30.07), and Feder built upon the strong start with a win in the 100-yard butterfly (1:09.59), giving Staples a commanding 71-20 advantage.

“A win is nice,” Staples head coach Jeff Schare said. “What really strikes me is individual races–a few swims that were outstanding for us today.”

Aside from the Wreckers’ record-setting races, Cory Bacon capped his last home meet by swimming the second-fastest time in school history (25.07) in the 50-yard freestyle.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” he said of the finale. “Looking back on it, I wish I could do more things in the high school season, but I’m really happy with the way it ended.”

Norwalk-Brien McMahon will conclude its regular season schedule on Thursday when it visits FCIAC counterpart Trumbull at Hillcrest Middle School. Although the swimmers struggled to match several of the Wreckers’ lightning-quick performances, Marchetti praised his team’s effort.

“Our kids worked their butts off,” Marchetti said. “They’re getting the work and they swim hard. They never put their head down and they never feel sorry for themselves. That’s part of something you want to enforce. That’s something that’s going to take them a long way in anything they do.”

Wrecker Swimmers Splash Wilton

February 11, 2011 by ·

By Eliot Schickler

The Staples boys swimming team evened its record to 3-3 with a 93-77 victory at Wilton Tuesday.

Senior captain Cory Bacon delivered two victories for Staples by winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.89 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle (49.88). Also scoring for the Wreckers in the 50-free were senior captain Scott Feder (23.99), and sophomore Mathew Wetmore (24.57), who were second and fourth, respectively. Junior Kyle Bacon (52.30) and freshman Justin Krakoff (55.30) were three-five in the 100-free.

Cory Bacon, Feder, Kyle Bacon and sophomore Nathaniel Boley won the 200-yard freestyle (1:32.65) and Cory Bacon, Kyle Bacon, freshman Jonathan Blansfield and Boley won the 400-yard freestyle (3:26.64).

“My teammates gave me a good lead, a full body length, in both, and I was able to hold on,” Boley said.

Staples also took third in both relay. Sophomore Marcus Russi, Wetmore, junior David Katter and Krakoff took third in the 200-free relay (1:37.69) and Wetmore, Krakoff, juniors Mathew Wisher and Joss Abel led the 400-free B relay team (3:39.14) to third place.

Boley won the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.80) convincingly, taking the race by more than six seconds.

“I wanted to get out to a quick start because I knew my opponent would be strong at the beginning,” Boley said. “It was a pretty good race. The whole team was excited because it’s one of our biggest meets of the season.”

Boley also took second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.18). Abel (2:11.98) was fourth in the 200-IM.

Depth also helped Staples. In a few events the Wreckers didn’t win, they held their own and prevented the Warriors from making up points. For example, Staples won the 100-yard breaststroke, 9-7, even though it didn’t win it because Abel (1:06.83), and freshmen Christopher Mombello (1:09.07) and Michael Deluca (109.63) placed second, third and fourth, respectively in the 100-breaststroke.

The Wreckers swam Wilton to an 8-8 tie in the 200-yard freestyle because Blansfield (1:53.56), Kyle Bacon (1:55.72) and senior captain Michael Goodgame (1:59.02) were two-three-five.

Wisher fought hard and grabbed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.99) and 100-yard backstroke (57.81). Feder (1:00.59) and Russi (1:02.51) were three-five in the 100-fly and Goodgame was fourth in the 100-back (1:02.49). Wisher, Abel, Feder and junior David Katter led the 200-yard medley team (1:47.50) to second place.

Westhill Splashes Wreckers

February 8, 2011 by ·

By Kate McNee

Despite swimming fast times, the Staples boys swimming and diving team lost 102-76 at home to Westhill Friday and dropped to 2-3.

“We got hammered by Westhill. Even though Staples had a good meet for Staples, West hill was just too strong for us,” Wreckers Coach Jeffrey Schare said.

Westhill swam a great meet, placing first in every race but one. TheVikings were able to boost their score tremendously with races in which several of their swimmers placed, such as the 200 meter IM race where they placed first, second and third.

Though Staples agrees that Westhill dominated, it still feels it swam well as a team. The Wreckers garnered 28 best times. Senior Ben Freeman noted that due to snow-caused practice cancellations, he felt that the team swam pretty well.

“It’s hard for average spectator to think it was a good meet, but when you look at our results it was a good meet for us. We have to focus on that going into the future,” Schare said.

Staples accumulated many of its points in the relays, such as the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay. Schare noted senior captain Scott Feder’s performance in several relays, and also in the 100-meter freestyle. Additionally, a big positive for Staples was the 100-meter backstroke. Sophomore Nathaniel Boley won this race with a time of 103.37, junior Matt Wisher placed second, and junior Joss Abel placed third.

Senior captain Corey Bacon said, “All in all everyone showed a great effort in the meet.”

Freshman Chris Mombello was noted by the team for his performance in the 100-meter breastroke race, in which he achieved a best time.

“I think that the biggest highlight of the night was Chris’ 100-meter breaststroke. The work that he’s put into practice is really starting to show,” Boley said.

Schare said that he felt freshman Nathaniel Blansfield swam a great meet, and that senior captain Michael Goodgame swam a “solid 500 in the meet.” Other key contributors were Corey and junior Kyle Bacon.

In diving, senior captain Zach Slater took third place, and freshman Andrew Cullen took fifth. Both divers are qualified for the state tournament after this meet.

The swimmers noted their need to improve their turns. Next week the Wreckers have a busy schedule, as they faced Wilton yesterday after press time, host Ridgefield tomorrow and have a tri-meet Friday against host Weston and Fairfield.
